Gombe State has emerged as Nigeria’s best-performing state in public hospital services, according to the latest nationwide healthcare assessment released by StatiSense.
The report ranked states based on residents’ satisfaction with the quality, accessibility and effectiveness of services provided in public health facilities. Gombe secured the number one position nationwide, outperforming states across both the northern and southern regions of the country.
The ranking is seen as a strong endorsement of the healthcare reforms implemented under Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya since assuming office in 2019.
According to the assessment, the ranking reflects growing public confidence in the state’s healthcare system, following years of strategic investments aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to quality medical services and strengthening overall service delivery.
Healthcare has remained a major priority of the Inuwa Yahaya administration, with significant investments in hospital upgrades, medical equipment, manpower development and primary healthcare revitalization.
Among the notable interventions are the renovation and expansion of the Gombe State Specialist Hospital, the upgrading of one General Hospital in each of the three senatorial districts, and the reconstruction of the General Hospital in Kumo, which was subsequently converted into a Federal Medical Centre by the Federal Government.
At the grassroots level, the administration upgraded at least two primary healthcare facilities in each of the state's 114 political wards, improving access to essential healthcare services for residents across rural communities.
The government has also recruited and trained healthcare workers, strengthened referral systems, provided modern medical equipment and partnered with development agencies to improve healthcare outcomes.
Efforts in maternal and child healthcare, disease control, emergency response and the implementation of the Gombe State Contributory Healthcare Scheme (Go-Health) have further enhanced service delivery and increased public trust in government-owned health facilities.
The latest ranking reinforces Gombe State’s growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading subnational governments in public service delivery, with healthcare emerging as one of the administration’s most notable success stories.
