With the distribution of tablet devices to journalists and other stakeholders, Gombe State Acresal's Project is strengthening the link between field-level interventions, credible data and public awareness of development achievements.
In development reporting, a project’s success is not measured only by the interventions it delivers, but also by the accuracy of the information used to track its progress and the effectiveness with which its impact is communicated to the public.
Recognising this connection, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project in Gombe State has distributed tablet devices to journalists and other stakeholders in a move aimed at improving data collection, project documentation and information dissemination.
The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on the role of reliable data and effective communication in documenting development interventions, measuring results and ensuring that the public remains informed about projects designed to improve their lives.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony, the State Project Coordinator, Dr Sani Adamu Jauro, acknowledged the media’s contribution to publicising ACReSAL’s activities and achievements, noting that journalists had helped bring the project’s interventions to wider public attention.
According to him, sustained media coverage has enabled more people to understand what ACReSAL is doing in Gombe State and appreciate the progress recorded through its various interventions.
For Jauro, the distribution of the devices goes beyond providing technological equipment. It represents a recognition of the media as an important partner in documenting development and communicating its impact to communities.
He disclosed that Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya directed the distribution of the tablets because of his appreciation of the media’s critical role in information gathering and dissemination.
The coordinator commended the governor for his vision and continued support for the project, expressing appreciation for the administration’s commitment to advancing ACReSAL’s activities in the state.
At the heart of the initiative is the need to improve the quality of information generated about project activities. Reliable data enables development programmes to document their interventions, monitor progress and provide evidence of the results they achieve.
With access to tablet devices, participating journalists and other stakeholders are expected to have improved digital tools for collecting, organising and reporting information relating to ACReSAL activities.
Such tools can support more efficient field documentation, strengthen the accuracy of reports and make it easier to communicate verified information about project implementation.
For journalists, the devices could also enhance their ability to document interventions at project sites and present clearer accounts of the work being undertaken, helping audiences understand not only what has been done but also why it matters.
Jauro’s commendation of journalists underscores the importance ACReSAL attaches to this partnership and its contribution to publicising the project’s achievements.
For a programme focused on environmental resilience and sustainable livelihoods, effective communication can help communities better understand its interventions and the objectives behind them.
The distribution of the tablets therefore presents an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between ACReSAL, journalists and other stakeholders, while promoting more systematic documentation of project activities.
As Gombe State continues to implement ACReSAL interventions, the emphasis on accurate data collection and effective information dissemination provides an important foundation for documenting progress and communicating results.
The initiative also reflects Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s stated commitment to supporting the project, according to Jauro, who acknowledged the governor’s role in directing the distribution of the devices.
Ultimately, the success of the intervention will depend not simply on the number of tablets distributed, but on whether they improve the quality of data collected, strengthen project monitoring and enable stakeholders to communicate credible information to the public.
By placing digital tools in the hands of journalists and other stakeholders, Gombe ACReSAL is seeking to reinforce an important principle of development: achievements must not only be delivered; they must also be properly documented, accurately measured and effectively communicated.
For the people of Gombe State, stronger documentation and credible reporting can provide a clearer picture of the progress being made, the challenges that remain and the impact of interventions intended to build more resilient communities.
