Climate change and environmental degradation remain among the greatest threats to semi-arid regions like Gombe State. But today, the story is changing ,from despair to renewal, thanks to the visionary leadership of Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro State Coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, Gombe State Acresal Project.
With the firm support of Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya and the World Bank, Dr. Jauro has turned ACReSAL into a force for environmental sustainability and community empowerment.
One of the biggest areas of impact is gully erosion control. Among the flagship multi-billion naira interventions are:
The massive project at Federal College of Education (Technical), Gombe, safeguarding critical infrastructure and learning environments.
The Hayin Misau to Government Girls College Doma gully ,once a deadly threat to lives, schools, and homes, now undergoing comprehensive remediation.
The gully from Gombe International Hotel to the Commissioner of Police’s residence, a major hazard, now being reclaimed through strategic engineering.
These are not just engineering works. They are saving communities, protecting infrastructure, and restoring ecosystems.
Beyond erosion control, ACReSAL is also addressing deforestation and household health. In Funakaye and Gombe LGAs, over 3,000 energy-efficient cooking stoves have been distributed, with plans to expand to all local governments.
To fight poverty and build resilience, ACReSAL has rolled out community livelihood programs, including:
Fish farming and poultry to create sustainable incomes.
Skills training for youth and women in the green economy.
A revolving loan scheme to support climate-smart agriculture and rural entrepreneurship.
So far, the project has restored 5,900 hectares of degraded land, created refuse dump centers to uphold a circular economy, and disbursed 35 million naira each to five clusters in Bajoga and Gombe for community-driven development.
These initiatives complement the Gombe Goes Green project of Governor Inuwa Yahaya, while reinforcing the World Bank’s commitment to sustainable development in the state.
In Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, Gombe has found more than a climate advocate, it has found a visionary leader who believes that the fight against climate change begins with community, collaboration, and committed action.
As ACReSAL continues to unfold, Gombe State is fast becoming a model for how climate challenges can be turned into opportunities for renewal, growth, and prosperity.
