Boost for Eye Care as NEDC Boss Visits Maiduguri Eye Hospital

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Mohammed Goni Alkali, has carried out an on-site inspection of the Maiduguri Eye Hospital in Borno State to evaluate the deployment of ophthalmic equipment supplied by the Commission and to monitor the ongoing specialised training programme at the facility.
The visit formed part of the Commission’s efforts to assess the impact of its health-sector interventions aimed at strengthening specialist eye-care services and improving access to quality healthcare across the North-East region.
During the visit, the MD/CEO was conducted round key clinical and training units of the hospital by the Lead Consultant and Chief Consultant in Ophthalmology, Prof. Abdull Mohammed Mahdi, who demonstrated the installed equipment and explained their clinical applications, offering first-hand insight into their role in diagnosis, treatment, and capacity building for eye-care professionals.

As part of the engagement, Prof. Mahdi delivered a technical presentation highlighting the prevalence and key challenges of eye diseases in Nigeria, with particular emphasis on the high burden of avoidable blindness and visual impairment in the North-East. He noted that the combination of advanced equipment deployment and structured professional training supported by the NEDC is significantly improving specialist eye-care delivery in the region.
Prof. Mahdi commended the MD/CEO and the Commission for their strategic leadership and commitment to impactful investments in the health sector, stressing that the intervention will greatly enhance patient outcomes. He also underscored the regional importance of the Maiduguri Eye Hospital, which serves patients not only from the North-East but also from neighbouring countries such as Niger and Chad, positioning it as a key regional referral centre.
The ophthalmic equipment supplied by the NEDC and showcased during the visit includes YAG and Diode Lasers for cataract and glaucoma treatments; Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Fundus Cameras for advanced retinal imaging; the ALADDIN Diagnostic System for comprehensive ocular measurements and intraocular lens calculations; OPTOS A-Scan and B-Scan Ophthalmic Ultrasound Machines; Digital Air-Puff and Handheld Rebound Tonometers for intraocular pressure measurement; Slit Lamp Biomicroscopes and Handheld Slit Lamps for detailed eye examinations; and Auto Refractors for accurate refraction assessment.
The visit reaffirms the NEDC’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare in the North-East through sustainable infrastructure development, modern medical technology, and continuous capacity building for healthcare professionals
