By Halilu Mohammed Teli Stakeholders from across Gombe State converged at the Command Guest House, Bauchi, for a five-day training on the Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) for projects under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative.
The gathering brought together traditional rulers, academics, community and religious leaders, legal experts, and journalists to deliberate on ways to strengthen accountability and justice in project implementation.
The Gombe State Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, Alh Mohammed Sa’idu Fawu, who declared the training open, emphasised the importance of GRM in governance. He said:
“The Grievance Redress Mechanism is a vital tool for ensuring that community voices are heard, respected, and acted upon. Institutionalising this mechanism will strengthen accountability and reinforce trust between government, project implementers, and beneficiaries.”
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alh Mohammed Abubakar Bello Kumo, the Commissioner added:
“This training is designed to equip stakeholders with both locally based and formalised systems for receiving, assessing, and resolving community complaints and feedback.”
He further stressed that:
“Grievance redress is not merely a technical process but a moral obligation. It ensures that projects are implemented with justice, fairness, and inclusiveness, reflecting the commitment of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s administration.”
Speaking at the event, Dr Sani Adamu Jauro, Gombe State Project Coordinator for ACReSAL, welcomed participants and expressed gratitude for stakeholder support:
“The successes of ACReSAL in Gombe State are largely due to your cooperation and commitment. This workshop is organised to develop effective strategies for addressing challenges during project implementation, particularly complaints from benefiting communities.”
Dr Jauro urged participants to contribute actively:
“Everyone has a role to play in ensuring smooth project execution. Your ideas and suggestions will be instrumental in resolving emerging issues and improving service delivery.”
Associate Professor Dr Adamu Jibir of Gombe State University presented a paper on the objectives of the GRM training and types of grievances in project implementation. Meanwhile, Barr Mwalin Na’omi Abdu from the Ministry of Justice explained the GRM framework, procedures, protocols, and issues regarding litigation and alternative resolutions.
Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Women Affairs, Agriculture, and Animal Husbandry. Comrade Faruk Mu’azu, chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, and the representative of the Senior District Head of Gombe also addressed the participants.
The training aims to:
“Strengthen stakeholders’ capacity to handle grievances efficiently and enhance transparency and accountability in the implementation of ACReSAL activities across Gombe State.” – Dr Sani Adamu Jauro
