Minister Hails NEDC’s Compassionate Response to Bauchi Accident

By Halilu Mohammed Teli

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has donated professional work tools worth millions of naira and a cash sum of five million to journalists who sustained varying degrees of injuries in a motor accident while inspecting its projects in Bauchi State.

The donation was presented at the NEDC State Office in Gombe and included high-definition Canon and Sony video cameras, tripods, Samsung Galaxy smartphones, and other essential equipment that were either damaged or lost during the accident.

The five million cash support was provided to assist the affected journalists with medical expenses and recovery.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, commended the leadership of the commission for its swift and compassionate intervention.

He described the gesture as timely and reassuring, noting that journalists play a critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and public awareness of government programmes, especially in the North East.

The minister said supporting journalists in times of distress is both a humanitarian responsibility and an investment in democracy, adding that the federal government remains committed to the welfare of media professionals across the country.

Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali, said the commission was deeply concerned upon receiving news of the accident involving journalists on official assignment. He explained that assessments showed that many of the victims lost valuable working tools, making it necessary for the commission to replace the damaged equipment and provide additional financial assistance.

According to Alkali, the donation underscores the commission’s appreciation of the media as key partners in its mandate of rebuilding and stabilising the North East region, stressing that journalists remain vital in documenting development interventions and informing the public.

Also speaking, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi  described the NEDC’s intervention as commendable, particularly the speed with which it was executed. He said the support had boosted the morale of the affected journalists and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to press welfare.

While assuring the NUJ’s readiness to continue partnering with the NEDC in projecting its activities, Yahaya appealed to the commission to consider enrolling practising journalists into the NUJ Life Premium Insurance Scheme as a sustainable welfare measure.

In a vote of thanks, the Chairman of the NUJ Bauchi State Council, Sa’idu Umar, expressed gratitude to the NEDC for standing by the journalists from the scene of the accident through their hospitalisation.

He described the intervention as rare and reassuring, noting that it has further strengthened the relationship between the commission and the media.
