Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has inaugurated a series of bridges and road repairs in Gombe State under the Federal Government’s Emergency Special Intervention Project.
The minister, who was represented at the ceremony by the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, Faruk Mu’azu, said the intervention was approved by President Bola Tinubu to improve traffic flow and road safety in the state.
The projects include newly constructed bridges along Ture in Kaltungo on the Gombe–Yola highway, the reinstatement of failed shoulders and repairs of washed-out sections on the Gombe–Bauchi Road, as well as work on the Gombe bypass at Bomala.
In a message delivered on his behalf, Mr Umahi said the road was previously impassable, but the federal intervention has restored smooth movement for motorists. He said the bridges, carriageway underlay and shoulder reinstatements would enhance safety and reduce accidents.
The minister also commended President Tinubu for approving the dualisation of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe Road, describing it as a significant boost to transportation across the North-East.
The Director of Information at the Federal Ministry of Works, Mohammed Abdullahi, said the projects are part of 260 emergency interventions currently being carried out on critically damaged federal highways nationwide.
Meanwhile, the Federal Controller of Works in Gombe State, Mohammed Bappa, described the development as timely, noting that the road corridor links Gombe with Bauchi, Yola, Taraba and the Cameroon border.
He said the contract was awarded in January 2024 with a three-month completion period, adding that the works have now been successfully delivered.
